Content development

Content must be the prime culprit for delaying and causing grief in web design projects. Often it's cobbled together by everyone on the project, with important stuff squeezed in at the last minute, or not at all.

I can help you avoid all that, have a better website, and save time and money.

As your content developer, I'll do whatever is needed to get everything in the right place at the right time. This role includes copy-writing and editing but is much wider (see below), so having a broad background in web design is important.

How much do I charge?

I need to get some info about your project, so get in touch and I'll give you a quote. My daily rate is in line with NUJ guidelines.

Read on to find out more, or contact me about your project.

What does a content developer do?

Every project's different but here's a general outline to give you an idea.

Discovery and planning

  • Understand your organisation or business goals for the site, what your audience's needs are, and help work out a strategy for merging these interests
  • Audit the out-going site, if it's a re-design project
  • Review your marketing materials and publications
  • Review competing sites
  • Plan a content delivery schedule

Creating a framework

  • Create a content outline which provides a sound framework for the project, describes what content is needed and shows the size of the site
  • Work with your designers in developing the information architecture, and identifying what navigational text and images are needed

Collating, editing and writing

  • Collecting all materials (text, images, audio/visual and downloadable files), identifying gaps and quality issues
  • Editing and writing
  • Organising or commissioning writers and other content creators, if required
  • Writing metadata, and alt and title texts

Integrating content and quality control

  • Ensuring all content gets to the designers or developers on time
  • Adding content, if required
  • Checking all content is in place
  • Review and editing
  • Writing a style guide for website editors
Big pile of suitcases with voice bubble saying 'I know it's in here somewhere!'

Got a lot to cram in but don't know where to start? I can help...
